In the new year, Nike is about to launch new classically styled runner Atsuma, which has a unique design. The lateral side Swoosh of Nike Atsuma is mirrored by a cutout version on the medial.Both color and design are worthy of praise and expectation.
It’s a handsome aesthetic feature — pleasant for looks alone — but also one that manifested a design challenge. The charge: Reduce material waste by increasing pattern efficiency.
Nike Atsuma rethinks and reimagines how traditional cut-and-sew footwear can be improved by considering how offcuts can act as critical components of the shoe’s construction and beautiful elements of its design. In addition to the lateral and medial panels, the shoe’s heel counter and eyestay exhibit playful employment of negative space. So too does the hangtag, which is formed by a cutout on the outsole. A recycled sockliner adds to the considered decisions.
NIKE ATSUMA RELEASE DATE
Look for the Nike Atsuma to release on January 1st at select retailers and Nike.com. The retail price tag has yet to be announced.
